What is the maximum weight restriction for wall tiling?

Over recent years there has been high demand for larger and larger tiles. With this in mind it is important to take into consideration the weight of any tiles you are installing on your walls. Remember you need to consider the weight of any adhesive used as well as the tiles. Below is a guide for how much weight substrates should be able to hold.

As per BS5385, the maximum weight restrictions for wall substrates in good condition are:

  • Gypsum plaster: 20kg/m2
  • Gypsum plasterboard (12.5mm thickness): 32kg/m2
  • Sand and cement rendering: 64kg/m2
  • Lightweight foam-cored tile backer boards: 60kg/m2
  • Glass reinforced cement-based boards: 50kg/m2
  • Gypsum fibreboards: 40kg/m2
  • Other rigid tile backer boards: Consult manufacturer

  • If you are in doubt about what your substrate is,always consult a professional tiler.
